Biography
Dr William Chan is a Teaching Fellow of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, where he contributes to the MSt in AI Ethics and Society and MPhil in Ethics of AI, Data and Algorithms. Alongside his teaching work, he is a Data Ethics Consultant at Information Governance Services, working with legal professionals to produce industry-facing AI/data ethics education, events, opinions and training materials.
Before joining LCFI, he was an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Southampton. He also held teaching positions at the University of Manchester, SOAS University of London and the University of Hertfordshire. He earned his PhD in Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick in 2021.
William has received doctoral and postdoctoral training in normative democratic theory.
He has presented and written broadly about AI/data questions to which moral/political philosophy is relevant, such as digital authoritarianism, AI misinformation, AI chatbots and liberal education, EDI in AI and data, and data ownership. He is specialised at the political morality of AI and data, with a focus on the interactions between democratic values and AI/data governance.
