In April 2018, the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence co-organised a roundtable discussion with Open Reason on the topic 'Writing the global rules for AI: is international agreement feasible in the race for AI supremacy?' chaired by the former UK Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Nick Clegg, and hosted by the Jesus College Intellectual Forum in Cambridge.

It was a lively and engaging discussion among participants with a wide range of backgrounds including international relations, politics, international law, technology policy, machine learning, artificial intelligence, sinology, slavistics, history, social anthropology, and philosophy.

Participants from existing AI governance and ethics initiatives, such as the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, the Partnership on AI, the Harvard-MIT Ethics and Governance of AI Initiative, as well as the European Union's AI strategy, provided some initial food for thought based on these precedents, but most of the discussions focused on how to devise AI governance mechanisms with global appeal, in particular including China.
