Joel Holmes

Research Assistant

Joel is a Research Assistant on the LCFI Animal AI project, a 3d game environment for building and testing AI systems with "common sense" physical reasoning capacities. His role involves working with the Unity engine and python to develop the features and user experience of the Animal AI environment.

Joel is graduating this summer with a master's in Computer Science & Philosophy from the University of Oxford. His interests include physically based rendering, machine learning, formal logic, and the philosophy of cognitive science.

His master's project was a procedurally-generated 3D puzzle game whose rules implemented a complete, expressively adequate propositional proof system, and his mini-thesis in philosophy defended hybrid connectionism as a framework for modelling cognitive systems. Previously he was a computer science tutor and member of acapella group 'Out of the Blue'.
