On 9-10 March, the UK Government’s Science and Innovation Network organised a workshop for Leverhulme CFI and associated researchers to meet with counterparts from Germany and Austria. Generously hosted by the British Embassy in Berlin, the event allowed researchers to present their perspectives and ideas for collaboration on topics including the nature of intelligence, privacy and data protection, AI governance, trust and transparency, AI & human rights, and long term risks.

Participants included leading academics from a range of disciplines, including law, philosophy and machine learning, as well as representatives from think tanks, civil society, industry and the arts. 

Dr Stephen Cave, LCFI’s Executive Director, said after the event: “Germany and Austria have some of the leading researchers in AI and robotics, and in thinking about how to use those technologies responsibly. We at LCFI are hugely excited to be connecting with those researchers, and we are very grateful to the Science and Innovation Network and the British Embassy in Berlin for making it possible.”
